Google Web Accelerator is still alive - 9/02/2005 08:18:00 AM

I'd posted back in July that we should remember Google's Web Accelerator product. This had been left for dead when the beta was shut down amid a firestorm of fears that all web traffic would now be routed through Google servers, compromising security.

Well, the product is definitely still alive. My PC received another automatic version upgrade of the GWA executables this morning. The current version on my machine is:
googlewebaccclient.exe: version 0.2.58.74-pintail.a
googlewebaccwarden.exe: version 0.1.58.74-dogcatcher.a
Firefox extension: version 2005071817
And my "hours saved" indicator continues to advance much faster than it did in the past:
Load Time for 64535 Pages
Without Google Web Accelerator: 10.6 days
With Google Web Accelerator: 10.0 days
Total Time Saved: 15.8 hrs
Update 9/3/05 11:41 a.m. - After yestereday's GWA version update, my "hours saved" counter has started clicking much faster. I have no idea how accurate it is, but in the last 28 hours I've saved 1.5 hours over 1389 page views, or about 3.9 seconds per page. If this is accurate, it represents a significant speed boost.
Load Time for 65924 Pages
Without Google Web Accelerator: 10.9 days
With Google Web Accelerator: 10.2 days
Total Time Saved: 17.3 hrs
